The Exorcist: Believer (2023)
The Exorcist: Believer (2023) is a supernatural horror film that serves as a direct sequel to the classic 1973 movie The Exorcist. Directed by David Gordon Green, the film explores themes of faith, fear, and the power of evil, while paying homage to the legacy of the original.
The story centers on Victor Fielding, a father who has been raising his teenage daughter, Angela, alone after his wife tragically died during an earthquake in Haiti years earlier. Victor is a loving and protective father, and he’s particularly close to Angela, who is his whole world. Their peaceful life, however, takes a terrifying turn when Angela and her best friend, Katherine, disappear in the woods after school. Victor, panicked, enlists the help of the police and the entire community, but it takes three days before the girls finally reappear, seemingly unharmed. However, it quickly becomes clear that something is very wrong. Both Angela and Katherine begin to act strangely, displaying unsettling and violent behaviors that scare their families. Their appearances also change as they become pale, sickly, and increasingly disturbed. At first, doctors are unable to explain the changes, and their parents turn to different sources for help, fearing they’re losing their daughters to something unexplainable.
As Angela’s behavior worsens, Victor seeks out anyone who might be able to help, leading him to a woman named Chris MacNeil, who has a painful history with demonic possession. Chris’s daughter, Regan, was possessed fifty years earlier, and Chris went through a horrifying ordeal to save her. Though Chris and Regan are no longer close due to the trauma of those events, Chris has spent her life studying and understanding possession, hoping to help others avoid what her family went through.Chris agrees to help Victor and the girls' families, realizing that what Angela and Katherine are experiencing mirrors what happened to her daughter. She warns the families that they are not just dealing with psychological issues but are facing a demonic force that has taken control of the girls. The families realize that traditional means of help are failing, and they are left with one terrifying option: an exorcism.
A priest, along with other religious figures from various faiths, is called to perform the exorcism. The families watch in fear as the priest tries to confront the demonic forces tormenting Angela and Katherine. The exorcism itself is intense and violent, as the demons taunt, resist, and inflict suffering on everyone involved. The families are forced to confront their fears, their faith, and the limits of their own strength in a desperate attempt to save their daughters.
The Exorcist: Believer combines horror with psychological tension, showing how far a parent is willing to go to protect their child. The film delves into themes of faith, loss, and the struggle between good and evil, capturing the atmosphere and dread of the original Exorcist while introducing new characters and perspectives. Ultimately, it is a chilling reminder of the unknown forces that might be lurking in the shadows, waiting to prey on the vulnerable.
